Short film ‘Jargon’ created
for Information Prescriptions
e-learning programme

A short film was created for NHS Employers for an e-learning package to support staff in the delivery of information prescriptions.

The Challenge

A film was needed to highlight one of the key learning points of the online training programme. As part of the communication module the client wanted a film that addressed the issue of NHS personnel using medical ‘chat’ with patients and their families. Although it may be second nature to NHS staff it can be confusing to people, especially in times of stress and pressure.

Our Solution

It was decided to use the comparative scenario of a mechanic baffling a young lady with technical chat when she brings her car into the garage with a fault. This scene is played out to a point where the lady is unsure what she is being told and what options she has. It is at this point that the scene in the garage morphs into a hospital location and the mechanic becomes a doctor. He continues his assessment of the situation using medical jargon, which just makes the lady more worried and unsure.

The Results

The resulting film delivers an instantly memorable and effective message. Using the metaphor of a baffling garage mechanic, it delivers a powerful insight into the effect inappropriate and badly delivered jargon can have on its recipient.
