Business challenges brought to life through graphics viz-fest


SSE approached us to create several films that would bring to life the key business challenges that SSE leaders currently faced during a tough business climate, which would be used as part of full day events.

Central to the brief were films from the senior leaders on the subject of safety and interview-led films from senior management about the challenges and future business plans facing each of SSE’s divisions.

Additionally SSE also wanted to give a financial overview of where the business was currently positioned with special emphasis on the negative press surrounding the ‘Big Six’ energy companies and the impact of SSE’s bold decision to implement a ‘price freeze’.

Lastly, the business wanted to focus on two business divisions, H.R. and I.T., who’s reputation internally needed bolstering.

Our Solution

The interview-led films, whilst slick and effective at delivering the key messages, aren’t revolutionary in their execution. However, with the ‘Finance’ film and the two communications for H.R. and I.T. we decided we’d try and take an innovative approach to what could be perceived as fairly dry and uninspiring content.

To tell the story of SSE’s financial situation we decided to create a virtual cityscape upon which we could incorporate newspaper headlines, archive footage and a digital narrator. Visual fx artist Chris Brearley at VTR North created the film in After Effects and the film was audio designed by Spencer Bain.

In regards to the films for the H.R. and I.T. departments the concept was to depict where those functions were not meeting the business requirements. In collaboration with SSE Juice designed the films to be light-hearted in tone. By creating a visual style that combined the honest comments of SSE employees with a vibrant and amusing animation style the films brought a humourous slant to the employee comments, lessening the negative connotations.

The films introduced a session facilitated by the Heads of I.T. and H.R. where they accepted the employee’s feedback and subsequently addressed it by outlining plans and projects to solve those issues.

Due to the sensitive nature of the content the films is unavailable for external use.
