Leading Safety

As one of the UK’s oldest and most diverse construction companies, The Wates Group deliver complex projects in both the public and private sector. Whilst quality and efficiency are important to their continued success; operating injury free is an ongoing business-critical goal and a constant focus. The group’s recent results reflect the efforts that have gone into developing health & safety processes and delivering training.

Our challenge was to recognise and celebrate the safety achievements so far, and help Wates make a transition from good to great.

The Challenge

A critical part in this was in the consistency of behaviour of its management team. In a large, complex organisation operating in a demanding sector during difficult times; the management team face a variety of challenges to maintain business efficiency. As a forward-thinking organisation, they recognise that there is an on-going requirement to maintain focus and ensure that best practise is delivered as standard by all of their senior team, at all times.

It was important that we delivered a stimulating session that recognised the performance improvement made, but also challenged the leadership team to build on this success and encourage the continued personal ownership for raising standards to an even higher level.

Our Solution

Working in close partnership with the health & safety team, we designed and delivered a bespoke session to 100 representatives of the Wates Group Senior Management team at their annual conference.

The sessions incorporated filmed elements, live theatre and a series of facilitated activities, all of which were designed to deliver our key objectives:

  1. To encourage participants to consider how to maximise the positive influence that they have over safety critical processes
  2. To challenge participants to find ways to continuously improve their leadership of the Wates H&S culture... the ultimate risk management influencer
  3. To examine the way in which an outstanding leader would engage both Wates staff & supply chain employees on-site in order to improve H&S through asking high quality questions
  4. To highlight the importance of continual improvement in all areas of health & safety

Feedback

  • Excellent thought-provoking interactive, the session challenged one’s own approach and attitudes
  • An excellent way to get across some key messages about how leadership  positively influences SHE performance
  • Role play really made you think and analyse behaviours – too true to life at times.  Will help me change my own attitude when visiting site
  • Everyone in the room, regardless of function, will honestly evaluate their own performance and leadership and be honest with the improvements that they need to make
