Peabody owns and manages more than 20,000 properties across London including social housing, leasehold, shared ownership, supported housing, key-worker accommodation and commercial units.

Their key aims are the same now as they were when the organisation was founded in 1862. They are to:

Peabody’s commitment to promoting equality and diversity both as a service provider and as an employer meant that they were keen to work with a specialist to provide the highest quality of training so their workforce continues to meet the diverse needs of their customers.

The Challenge

Working alongside our colleagues at The Housing Diversity Network, we were asked to design and delivery a programme to:

  • To outline the key legislation covered in the Equality Act 201.0
  • To clearly illustrate employee’s responsibilities to the Act.
  • To explore how E&D issues impact upon both the customer experience and internal staff relationships through attitudes and behaviours of employees.
  • How ‘respect’ for others feeds into the E&D agenda.

To encourage participants to explore their own prejudices and the ways in which they may stereotype others

Our Solution

Matt Cleve (our Learning and Development Director) started the process by getting to know the organisation and their residents; following a comprehensive consultation process he created a workshop designed to deliver three key messages:

  1. That it’s not just about legal compliance, there is also a business and moral case for considering Equality & Diversity issues.
  2. That Equality and Diversity is inextricably linked to delivering customer excellence.
  3. That we are all affected by equality and diversity issues, and it’s our own attitude that dictates behaviour.

Because the legislation can appear complex it was vital to the success of the learning that we delivered the information in a way that would really engage with the delegates and bring these issues to life so that would be relevant to their working lives.

Our Creative Director – Mark Knight, led a team of locally cast actors to produce three films that were designed to highlight that there are different types of discrimination, that our individual perceptions drive behaviour and exactly what constitutes unacceptable behaviour. The films were then delivered during training sessions as part of the induction programme for new staff, we ensured that before they even started their careers at Peabody, they would have the knowledge, skills and most importantly of all – the attitude to behave positively and professionally with customers and colleagues alike.
