Magnox Maintenance Teams

Following hot on the heels of our highly successful Half-Life programme Magnox were keen to reinforce the expected standards of conduct and responsibilities for all members of the Maintenance Team as set out within existing company information.

As the plant makes the transition from power generation to defueling and decommissioning, these standards become as important as ever while restructuring of the Wylfa operation is underway.

The Requirement

We therefore needed to reinforce a number of critical standards for the Maintenance Teams, including amongst others: Maintenance Activities, Standards & Expectations, Supervision & Authorisation and Documentation & Procedures.

While individuals and teams were aware of the expected standards, the day to day reality of working-life was that performance across teams was inconsistent and excellence wasn’t necessarily being achieved by everybody all of the time.

A major focus of Juice Learning’s intervention was on nurturing a ‘Want to Improve’ attitude amongst the Maintenance Teams rather than a ‘Have to Comply’ mindset, as well as covering areas of best-practice associated to process and procedure.

Our Approach

The sessions we designed combined a number of different elements, each created to engage the participants in different ways.

Firstly, we developed a series of short films, all shot on-site, using actors to portray a range of representative characters and job roles within typical maintenance tasks. The films were designed to depict a realistic view of standards at present; sometimes good and sometimes with room for improvement.  Ultimately the films provided a springboard for discussion within the events where the practice portrayed can be analysed and debated by the participants.

Secondly, we commissioned the services of an outside company who run an F1 Pit-Stop activity to participate in the event.  This unique team-building activity sees delegates presented with the opportunity to compete against the clock in completing a full tyre-change on a genuine F1 car utilising a full complement of authentic equipment.  As in a real F1 pit-stop, the aim of the activity is to work together effectively to achieve the quickest possible tyre-change.

In amongst these major event elements were a number of smaller activities and discussions, focusing the participants upon their role in an ongoing culture of consistent improvement.  Specific aspects of their roles such as Pre-job Briefings were also explored in some detail with a view to defining how these tasks and responsibilities should be undertaken effectively.
