Attitude Matters

EnterpriseMouchel specialise in providing highways network management and maintenance across the UK, they currently employ over 1,300 people including civil, highways and structural engineers, project managers, quantity surveyors, tunnels specialists, and a team of highly skilled, safety conscious operatives. They are rightly proud of their ongoing focus on becoming safer in every area of their operation. As part of this drive towards safety they approached Juice to deliver a behavioural safety programme to their workforce.

The Challenge

It’s a basic principle of learning that in order to be able to do any task successfully you need to have the right knowledge, skills and attitude.
As an example, we often ask our delegates these 3 questions:

  1. Do you know the legal speed limit on a UK Motorway?
  2. Are you capable of controlling your vehicle so you do not
    exceed this?
  3. Have you ever exceeded the speed limit?

What we’re demonstrating here is that having the necessary knowledge (of the speed limit) and the appropriate skills (to drive beneath the speed limit) amounts to nothing without having the right attitude. And it’s our attitude to driving that leads to so many drivers exceeding the speed limit.
Exactly what determines our attitudes and how can we improve these - especially when it comes to safety at work, was the question that the safety team at EnterpriseMouchel asked us to address.

Our Solution

“Attitude Matters” was a bespoke day-long training workshop designed by our Health & Safety Specialist Matt Cleve, its key aims were:

  • To encourage open and honest discussion of health & safety issues
  • To examine health & safety culture and identify areas for improvement
  • To highlight the importance of having a positive attitude towards H&S
  • To improve relationships of trust within the organisation
  • To encourage all staff to take personal responsibility for their own and each other’s safety
  • To highlight the wide-ranging consequences when things go wrong as a result of working unsafely

Using a wide variety of techniques Matt worked with the delegates to examine the causes of accidents, introduce risk assessment tools, better understand the four elements of a safe culture (Training, Policies & Procedure & Process, Leadership and Behaviours) and most importantly of all – understand how each and every individual contributes to a safety focussed culture.

As we illustrated in the example above; changing attitudes leads to a shift in behaviour. But most of us change because we want to, not just because we have to, and that’s where the theatrical element of the sessions played its part.

In a series of hard-hitting, occasionally humorous scenes and a powerful final monologue, our superb cast of actors did a great job in engaging the audience with the topics and creating a real desire for change. They demonstrated how attitude affects behaviour, and how our behaviour can have far-reaching consequences.
